Overworked woman saves abandoned puppies on the side of the road, and finds hope for a second chance at life she didn't expect: 'I’m actually starting to feel like myself again'

Get your tissues out, this is one doggone amazing rescue story.

A woman who was going through a ruff time in life stumbled upon some abandoned puppies off the side of the road. "Ruff" is putting it nicely. SHe was in a really dark place, and one of these puppies saved her. She wasn't planning on keeping them, but one of them, whom she named 'Huckleberry', looked at her with his big, blue eyes, full of light and life, and she felt a change. She almost gave him away to another family, but realized that they were meant to be together. The other family even said so!

When people are feeling down, we always recommend spending time with doggos. Not just because they're fluffy balls of happiness, but because they teach you to take care of yourself by learning how to take care of them. A dog doesn't care if you're sick, tired, or don't want to get out of bed - if they have to go outside, they'll annoy you until you get up and take them yourself. They teach people the importance of routine, and once you set a healthy routine, it's nearly impawssible to go back to your destructive ways. Through loving them, you love the "new you", the person you are when you're with them, and they give you hope that there is joy in living.

    Huckleberry was only 8 pounds, all his ribs showing, & very shy around people. I had no desire to have a puppy again.

  • We feel that sentiment 100%. Puppies are great. They're adorable. But they're also a lot of work. Our dog is finally considered an “adult” dog and only after 3 years are we even starting to think about getting another puppy. You need a break from all the chaos to enjoy your dog finally settling into their adult personality before throwing your house into puppy mode again.

    But...one of the pups. The littlest one. The shyest. There was just something about him. I would almost equate it to finding the animal version of your soulmate.

    I was crazy about him, & he was crazy about me. I didn't dread waking up in the morning anymore, because | knew me & the pup would start the day playing.

    I didn't dread nights as much (nights had been so hard while I had been having my mental breakdown), because Huckleberry would cuddle up with me, & before you knew it, my insomnia-plagued mind would miraculously sometimes sleep.

  • You know what's crazy? When our partner snores, we can't sleep at all. We even sometimes have to ask them to sleep in the living room. But when our dog snores? It's like music to our ears. We fall asleep in an instant. Maybe it's that we take comfort in knowing they can sleep so soundly, or maybe it acts like some puppy version of white noise. It's ironic, actually.

    I prepared to say my goodbyes & to refocus my attention on planning my funeral. I know that sounds bad, but that was where I was.

    But that week, I needed to travel out of state for a work trip. It was going to be a 4 hour drive, & a couple night stay.

    But the idea of roadtripping with the puppy actually sounded kinda fun. I booked a pet- friendly hotel & off I went, my little stray happily loading up in the car with me.

    He was best copilot in the car, a perfect guest at the hotel, helped my anxiety & depression go from crippling to almost non-existent, & made me realize that maybe I did want to keep fighting.

    I hope I'll be able to return to work soon. I have always loved animals. I have several right now (a Husky mix, my beloved cat, 5 feral kittens/young cats that I'm caring for while I try to find them homes, & my 2 horses.) I love them all dearly, but Huckleberry is just different.

    Huckleberry is with me almost 24 hours a day. He never leaves side. He's no longer my 8 pounds (he's closer to 70 no) but he still thinks he's a lap dog, & I'm not about to tell him that he's not.
